Mat Capper Drums

Professional session drummer based in Bristol, UK.

I started drumming in 2001 at school, having previously played cornet I decided to switch. No, I have no idea why! Anyway, since starting my drum teacher recommended that I play in the school wind band and from there I went on to play in a brass band from 2003 until 2012. Being in a brass band has certainly shaped my playing, and I wouldn't be at the standard I'm at now without it. It was a huge help for my ability to read music, and as well as that has made me aware of the feeling of playing beneath a musical director.

I, primarily am a rock drummer. I am a huge Iron Maiden and Led Zeppelin fan, I'm also a big metal fan but as well as this I enjoy listening to a variety of artists including Laura Marling, Buddy Rich, Miles Davis and so on. Since enroling at BIMM in 2012 I have been introduced to a much further spread of music so I think my musical taste is expanding quite rapidly.

I would say rock and metal drumming is my forté and that style of music is what I am comfortable with. However, it is the music I am most used to, and have been playing for around 6 years now. It is in my interest to explore other styles as I am currently trying to expand my repetoire. I have found recently that it tends not to be the style of music that draws me to an artist but the artist themselves and their personality. If an artist is passionate about their work and really believes in it then I will believe in their song too.

Previously I have been in a metal band, a progressive rock band and a pop/rock outfit as well as a brass band and a little bit of orchestral playing. During my time with these bands I have done a range of live shows, a number of recording sessions and have experienced playing in "Battle of the Bands" set-ups.

During my time in bands I have been in the studio on numerous occasions. Each time whether it's with a new band or some familiar faces I learn something new, it may be something about my playing or something about mixing sounds and other production related jobs. I believe going into the studio should be a learning curve every single time and if I feel like it isn't then I don't think I'm doing my job properly.

I want to be a part of session work for the reasons I have stated, I love working with enthusiastic people and I think I am one myself. To be able to work with talented musicians and amazing people every day would be something I strive for, and something I would certainly not take lightly.
